The term shotgun originated among U.S. soldiers in Vietnam, who sometimes smoked the plentiful local sativas out of their shotguns by fitting a loaded pipe into the chamber, lighting it, and having one soldier blow the smoke from the pipe down to his buddy waiting at the business end of the weapon. Nowadays, the same concept can still be applied, albeit without the actual shotgun. The shotgunner simply puts a smoking joint into his mouth backwards, holding the lit end inside so that it doesn't burn his lips. The "shotgunned" then inhales from the unlit end at the same time his buddy exhales in the opposite direction.
