Meet Mary Jane: Panama Red

Made famous by the New Riders of the Purple Sage song of the same name. Panama Red is powerful sativa named for it's red hairs. Not commercially available since the 80's (at least outside of Panama), the famous Red lends its genetics to some of today's top strains, including Love Potion #1, a winner at the 2005 Cannabis Cup.

It's Science

Of the seventy known herbal cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD), and cannabinol (CBN) are the most prevalent, and their medical properties have received the most study.

GROW IT FOR YOUR COUNTRY

Believe or not, the first American law regarding marijuana was actually pro-pot. A law established in the American colonies in 1619 required farmers to grow hemp, as colonists could use it for clothing and rope.

A COOL, DARK PLACE

Okay, you went off and got yourself some weed. You rolled some, you smoked some, and you passed it to the left-hand side -- all very good. But what about the rest of your stash? For best results, store your dried herbs in an airtight container that's large enough not to crush them, and then hide it in a cool, dark place. Most importantly, don't forget your hiding place. Yes, it happens, and the ensuing search is a very frustrating way to waste an afternoon.

Thank you High Times for the hide and seek tips.

THC FOR TEETOTALERS

In the 1980's, temperance activists recommended marijuana as an alternative to alcohol, arguing that marijuana didn't lead to domestic violence while alcohol often did.

EAT IT, WEAR IT, BUT DON'T SMOKE IT

Cannabis sativa L. subspecies sativa variety sativa sounds like some kind of futuristic space-weed, but you wouldn't want to smoke it. That's actually the specific variety of hemp grown legally in Europe, Canada, China and elsewhere around the world for food, fuel, and fiber. Industrial hemp contains only trace amounts of THC (0.3 percent by Canadian standards which means you'd have to ingest a whole field of the stuff in one sitting to get anywhere near the effect found in one joint of today's high-grade grass.

A TALE OF TWO GANJAS

By the time humans discovered how to get high, cannabis had already seperated into two easily distinguishable lines, with sativas growing wild in almost all equatorial regions of the globe, and indicas thriving in Southern Asia and the Indian subcontinent. In each case, the plants were eventually discovered, recognized, cultivated, and bred for their desired characteristics --sativas for straight smoking, and indicas for making hashish and kif.

MEET MARY JANE: G-13

Allegedly, G stands for "government" and 13 for M, the thirteenth letter of the alphabet. Put them together, and you've got G-13, government marijuana, purportedly pinched from the federal Marijuana Research Facility at the University of Mississippi. Whether you believe the story or not, this pure indica unleashes a powerful high and an intense, musky flavor.

SKILL OF THE MONTH: CULTIVATING

SKILL OF THE MONTH: CULTIVATING

If you're thinking about planting some herb of your own, you should take great comfort in the fact that Mother Nature has been successfully propagating cannabis sativa since a time long before anyone came along to name it. Simply provide your plants with proper light, air, water, and nutrients, and they will flourish, producing the kind of fat, sticky, resin-coated buds you've grown accustomed to drooling over in the pages of High Times. Give them all the love they deserve, and you can yield enough to put yourself(or your kids)through college, but as soon as you neglect any one of these elements, your ganja will suffer, and so will your harvest. Also, because of society's misguided prohibitions, you'll have to keep your garden a secret, which can involve anything from scouting the ideal planting location in the middle of a remote patch of sticker bushes to adding air filters to your basement grow room to keep the smell of fresh grass from wafting up to the neighbors.

SMOKESCREENS: HIGH TIMES REVIEWS METHODS OF STONER SCENT REDUCTION

SMOKESCREENS: HIGH TIMES REVIEWS METHODS OF STONER SCENT REDUCTION

METHOD - Fans

ADVANTAGES - Disperse smoke rapidly through air circulation. Also, it's sometimes cool to turn them off and watch the whirring blades slowly wind down.

DISADVANTAGES - Unless properly aligned, they can backfire, pushing a fragrant trade wind out your door and into the hallway.

Thank you High Times for the words.

STONER SONGS: "LEGALIZE IT" (1976)

Once a member of the Wailers alongside Bob Marley, Peter Tosh embarked on a highly political solo career after leaving the band, including this anthemic call to change the marijuana laws:"Legalize it / Don't criticize it / Legalize it, and I will advertise it." Never afraid to voice his opposition to hypocritical governments, both in Jamaica and around the world, Tosh once smoked a spliff on stage during a concert attended by the Prime Minister of Jamaica while demanding the legalization of cannabis.
